LEARN: Guastavino Tile

/>They’re called SUBWAY tiles, but who put them in the subway in the first place??? I couldn’t seem to get a straight answer on exactly who came up with those tiles for the subway. The reasons for use are clear: they’re clean-looking when they ARE clean, they’re easy to scrub down and they’re pretty durable little things. People use them now because they’re a bit of a throwback, but still look modern and /once again/ CLEAN! But who was it, I want to know, who sat down with a white-glazed ceramic tile and said, “This! Use this!”

…and then I looked it up on wikipedia. Go figure. It seems to have been a couple of individuals. These guys were the architects: Heins

& LaFarge. And this guy designed the most gorgeous stop of all: Rafael Guastavino. Heins and LaFarge get most of the credit for choosing the tile and then implementing some of the

first really cool mosaic designs that are at each of the stops. But Guastavino came up with the vaulted and tiled ceilings in the City Hall stop, which is sadly no longer in use. One can see the tile via the internet, on the ground level entrance at the Brooklyn Bridge – City Hall stop or the super-secret method of staying on the 6 train as it ends the line and has to loop around at City Hall.

I mean, look at that! And, lo and behold, it turns out another strong reason for the tiles was how it reflected the light from the grates and skylights above. Exactly what I experienced when my tiles went up behind my kitchen shelves.

As Katie said, we’ve got some serious before and afters on the way. Subway tiles included.

For me, they were a

given: they made my space feel cleaner, cozier AND more sophisticated; but the more I got out there and started looking for inspiration and ideas, the more I saw subway tiles EVERYWHERE. Differing sizes, colors, grout colors and patterns. First off, I got mine for free… the favor of a friend who had extras lying around… in differing whites :). Also, my space is large for New York—spesh on my budget—but still quite a little guy so dark grout seemed too risky an option. That left me with little to decide, and I was honestly quite happy because of it. I gathered a couple of images I felt gave me the most insight into how the sizes, grout and location changed the impact and feel of the tiles.

Lots of stuff going on here with the exposed shelving, dining table so close to the kitchen and vertical wood contrasting the horizontal tiling, but the slightly darker grout works for me. I think it’s the generally white canvas with teensy pops of color all around that really makes it feel so balanced.

Left: Holy Subway Tiles! Tall wall, dark grout and it works soooooo amazingly. Those natural wood pieces across the bottom give my eye something to rest on and follow while my tactile needs are more than satisfied with all the uneven grout and natural objects in the room. Right: Are you kidding me??? Whoever thought to do this is genius and nowIwanttogoswimminginanocean. Brilliant. The white grout here is perfect. All throughout looking at these images I was realizing the white grout really allows for color-blocking in a room while adding a shiny sheen. This is the perfect usage of said realization.

Ok. More to come. But I srsly have to stop looking at subway tiles on the internet, and instead scrub the ones in my bathroom.

IMPLEMENT: Subway Tile Part 1

It appears it is going to be subway tile week. I am excited to do some investigating into the history of why these tiles are called subway tiles or if these even are subway tiles?? The tiles in the image are 3″x6″. I believe that 2″x3″ might be what is considered a true subway tile, but more on that later this week. Christie has been having her own fun with these tiles as well. I cannot wait to see her pictures!

The images are a little sneak peak into a home I have been working on here in New Orleans. I have shared some of the design boards with you and the project is well under way now. Neither the clients or I cared for their cabinetry and

countertops, but replacing or even painting them was not in the budget at this time. We had to do something to spruce it up though!! A coat of Benjamin Moore’s GREY (the perfect charcoal by the way) and a few subway tiles later… a much improved kitchen. Can’t wait for the crown to be finished.

I had to share the breakfast nook as well :)
